Candelight Ranch - Lago Vista, TX (45 min from Austin)

Candlelight Ranch is a beautiful, hundred acre property in the Texas Hill Country. It was founded by the Barr Family of Austin, Texas, to serve as a setting for outdoor camp experiences for children with special needs. In addition to acres of rolling hills and easy lake access, the property offers thickly wooded canyons carved by spring-fed creeks and waterfalls. Facilities include a main cabin with bathroom and kitchen facilities; a shower and toilet block; a tree house; a fire pit; a playground; a zip line course as well as miles of hiking and nature trails. For more information please check out their website at http://www.candlelightranch.org.

The camp, which lasts for 3 days and 2 nights, costs $950 for up to five people. There may be up to three other families at the camp but on average we have two or three families in total. The price includes accommodation (in tents), a guided walk into the canyon, a two hour zip lining session (weather permitting), full use of the facility and all horse activities. The price does not include food. There is access to a full kitchen with a large fridge/freezer, oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker etc.

The 2014 dates with spaces left on them include:

  • March 21st-23rd
  • May 2nd-4th
  • September 5th-7th
  • November 14th-16th

Horse Boy Mini Camps typically take place at our headquarters in Elgin, TX although we do occasionally offer them in other locations. The camp consists of a morning or afternoon session of 3-4 hours which may be shared with up to three other families. The cost of the camp is $150 for up to five people. Aside from horse riding, activities we have had on offer in the past include painting the horses, grooming the horses, small animal petting zoo, jousting games, treasure hunts, camp fires, parachute games, balls games etc. The activities on offer at each 'mini camp' vary depending on the weather and the interests of the kids. However if you are interested in a particular activity or think your child will particularly like an activity then please let us know in advance and we will do our best to accommodate you.

We typically offer family weeks to families that are coming in from out of town although they are an option for local families as well. A family week begins with a 3 day/2 night camp at Candlelight Ranch (see above for more information). You then have the option of tagging on between one and three extra days at our headquarters, New Trails. The price per day is $350 for a 3 hour session. We suggest that you take a 1-2 day break between the camp and any additional days that you choose to schedule. The extra sessions at New Trails will allow us to work more intensely with you and your child. We will ask you to fill out a questionnaire after the camp in order to allow us to ascertain specifics of what you wish us to work on (e.g. communication, rule based games, academics) and then will tailor your sessions accordingly.

Accommodation is included during the camp but is not for the tag on days as we do not have the facilities to accommodate families. There are some great, affordable accommodation options in the area though and we are happy to advise you about autism friendly places to stay. New Trails is about 1.5 hours from where the camp is located and Austin airport is only 30 minutes away. However, since this is Texas, public transport is not really an option so you will need to hire a car.
